In 1986, he had an influential run in meeting and befriending Sumner Redstone. It was so because he was representing a client who was doing business with Redstone, and the two hit it off quickly.

In this capacity, Dauman became a close confidante of Redstone and was instrumental in acquiring the media firm Viacom in 1987. This marked the beginning of their close working relationship.

Dauman tenure was also characterized by some controversies, some of which include shareholders displeasure with executives salaries and how the firm tackled digital media.

The most threatening threat, however, manifested in a hard-knock rivalry showdown in which Shari Redstone, the daughter of Sumner Redstone, publicly announced warfare on Viacom leadership and the family trust. The fight for leadership culminated in Dauman leaving the company in 2016.

He was awarded a severance package worth $93 million. This included a salary of $3.6 million, stock awards worth $13.8 million, option awards priced at $7.5 million, non-equity incentives amounting to $9.7 million, and $58.4 million of other compensation – this compensation does include his severance payment.

After leaving Viacom, Dauman focused on investment activities through his firm, PPD Management.
